Awards 2023

The international jury 2023

A Word from the President of the Jury

Each year, Population awards a prize to a student or early-career researcher for their work. This year’s edition welcomed the submission of 20 manuscripts—14 in French and six in English—by 21 authors who had obtained their master’s or doctoral degree in demography, sociology, economics, anthropology, public health, and survey methodology in the 7 years before the submission deadline. Submissions covered France (six papers), Europe (three), Africa (seven), Asia (two), North America (one), and the world (one). Using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, they focused on subjects within the broader topics of population studies: family, fertility, health, migration, social position, development, etc.

After the journal’s editors and I reviewed the texts, 12 manuscripts were shortlisted. Each paper was double-blind peer reviewed by two external specialists. The jury met on 6 and 7 February 2023 to discuss these texts and reader reports.

Regrettably, we could not award a prize this year. While the manuscripts were of great interest and a pleasure to review, none could be published without major revisions in the time this prize requires.

Nevertheless, the jury identified several particularly promising papers and invited their authors to submit a revised version to the journal’s editorial board. I hope these candidates will do so and see their valuable research come to fruition.

The jury congratulates all participants and encourages students and early-career researchers in population studies to submit their work to Population.
