The “False Problem” of World Population

By Alfred Sauvy
English

Global overpopulation has recently been decried as a problem by various authors. Too simplistically, they compare the potential growth of the world’s population with the amount of resources available for subsistence, without properly discerning how the two interact with one another. Most often, this problem is set out in such a flawed manner that it can only lead to flawed solutions, inapplicable or unsuited to their purpose. To make matters worse, the issue is itself so uncertain that rationally watertight conclusions cannot prevail. Rather than attempting generalized studies in which emotional motives too easily take over, therefore, it is more fruitful to turn our attention to the populations of specific national or social communities.
